Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
Today I will be reviewing the tv show Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. It is a spinoff of the Showtime Penny Dreadful series. I was a huge fan of the series and was very upset when it got cancelled after the 3rd season. Eva Green and the whole cast was amazing. The writing and storyline was captivating! Anyways I just found out this show was a spinoff don’t know how I missed that. I honestly think this should have not been connected to the 1st series since it gave fans higher expectations and probably gave the wrong impression. I have been reading negative reviews for that reason. I believe this would have been more successful if it had been set apart as its own stand alone series. With that being said I loved this show!
It is finally great to see a show where part of my Mexican culture is represented! The main premise of this show is about Los Angeles in the 1930s and the racial tension between Chicanos and White Americans. Ironically it sounds like the world we are living in today! It takes place in the era of Pachucos, roads being built and tearing down Chicano neighborhoods, Nazi and more! The story revolves around Tiago who is one of the 1st Chicano Detectives in LA. As a kid he saw and was touched by La Santa Muerte. Who ironically is worshipped by his Mexican mother. Santa Muerte plays a very important character in the story even though she is barely seen in the show.
There is a war between Santa Muerte and her sister Magda who is a Demon or in some reviews say she is la Santisima Negra. Magda plays multiple characters in the show as she can shapeshift. She does this to stir chaos and violence and to show her sister humans are not worth saving because they will destroy each other in the end! I really loved this show because it takes a bit of History and mixes it with Mexican lore. The characters are given depth and you can relate to them. I do hope this show gets renewed for a 2nd Season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t with all that is currently going on in the world.
The only downside was the actors who are playing Mexicans or Chicanos are not Mexican. We definitely still need more Brown representation in Hollywood. I mean the actors were latinos like Daniel Zovatto who plays the main character Tiago who is supposed to be Chicano, is Costa Rican in real life. So that was a bit disappointing, but other than that the cast was great! The writing was beautifully done and the cinematography was amazing! Def recommend checking out this show!
